Housing
The dream of homeownership is slipping out of reach for too many Canadians, and the cost of rent is making it almost impossible for people to get ahead. And with incredibly high home prices in Etobicoke-Lakeshore being among the highest in Canada, people in our community can feel it even more. Every piece of data shows that the Liberals have failed to build enough homes to keep up with Canada’s growing population.
Under the Liberal government, housing costs have doubled over the past nine years, outpacing every other G7 country. In 2015, it took just 39% of the median household income to cover homeownership costs. Today, that figure has skyrocketed to nearly 60%. What was once attainable for working-class Canadians has become a distant dream. Now, 80% of Canadians believe homeownership is only for the very wealthy, and Ontario alone is home to over 1,400 homeless encampments.
I am also deeply concerned that housing starts continue to trend lower while Canada’s population grows. Trudeau’s photo-ops have failed to deliver any meaningful increase in homebuilding. His housing strategy has been a complete failure, with no sign of meeting the target of 5.8 million homes by 2030 to restore housing affordability.
I am committed to making homeownership affordable again. I fully support axing the GST on new homes sold for under $1 million, a move that will help spark the construction of thousands of additional homes each year. I also believe we must work with provincial governments to remove their sales tax on new homes, saving tens of thousands of dollars for homebuyers across the country.
Furthermore, I strongly support our Leader’s Building Homes, Not Bureaucracy Act, which would require cities to accelerate their homebuilding efforts and meet housing targets more quickly. This plan would reward cities that build homes while penalizing the gatekeepers who hinder construction.
You deserve a Member of Parliament who will get homes built quickly by tying federal infrastructure dollars to housing completions and removing bureaucratic barriers. Let’s make homeownership a reality again.
